Calling all 2025 ESMRMB abstract authors! Bridge the communication gap with a General Audience Pitch (GAP) Competition!

Communicating science is a vital skill, not only among fellow researchers but also with the wider general public. However, explaining complex scientific concepts to someone without specialized knowledge can be challenging. Often, effective communication from scientists to the general public can be hindered by the use of scientific jargon and a focus on intricate details, rather than the broader context and impact of the research.

To help bridge this communication gap, the ESMRMB Early Career Researchers Committee (ECRC) is excited to announce the ESMRMB 2025 General Audience Pitch (GAP) Competition!

Explain in language that is understandable by everyone and using intuitive illustrations, the broader challenge your science is addressing and how your abstract contributes to overcoming this challenge. These pitches are specifically designed to communicate with the general public and are not intended as lightning talks (i.e. short versions of a scientific talk) during the annual meeting itself.

We believe your 2025 ESMRMB abstract holds valuable insights that can resonate with a broader audience. Now is your chance to compete in the GAP Competition and win! Prizes are:

  • 1st Place: EUR 200
  • 2nd Place: EUR 100
  • 3rd Place: EUR 50

The winners of the 2025 GAP competition will be revealed and their videos played during the plenary awards session at the 2025 ESMRMB annual meeting! Plus, with your permission, your video will be featured on the ESMRMB’s YouTube channel, significantly expanding the visibility of your research.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Guidelines for Your GAP Video:

  • Duration: Maximum 2 minutes.
  • Format: Landscape orientation, saved as a .MP4, .avi, or .mov file.
  • Content: Start with a brief introduction of yourself and your research topic. Clearly explain the broader issue your research addresses and how the findings presented in your 2025 abstract contribute to improving or solving this issue. Crucially, avoid scientific jargon and explain any technical terms simply. Focus on the bigger picture and the potential impact for the general public.
  • Style: Get creative! Make your video engaging and show your enthusiasm for your research. Feel free to use visuals like animations, diagrams, or even short demonstrations to help illustrate your points.
  • Target Audience: Imagine you’re explaining your research to a friend or family member who has no scientific background.

How Your Video Will Be Assessed:

  • Clarity and Conciseness: How effectively do you communicate the essence of your research and its broader relevance in an easy-to-understand manner for the general public?
  • Engagement: Is your presentation style captivating and does it hold the audience’s attention?
  • Impact: Does your video successfully convey the significance and potential real-world applications of your research to a non-scientific audience?

Please note: While production quality is not a primary judging criterion, the video and audio should be clear enough for the judges to assess the above points.
